Biswangan Shiksha Niketan
An Initiative of Biswangan Foundation
Biswangan Foundation currently runs two schools serving children in remote and underserved communities of West Bengal:
- Biswangan Shiksha Niketan, Kumirmari, Sundarbans, established on 7 April 2025
- Biswangan Shiksha Niketan, Tanasi, Purulia, established on 19 January 2026
While the two schools are located in very different geographical settings, they share a common educational philosophy: to provide quality education from the pre-primary stage, nurture the whole child, reinforce human values and create opportunities for children who have limited access to quality education.

Why We Exist
Remote communities often face a combination of geographical, economic and social barriers that limit children’s access to quality schooling, healthcare and opportunities for personal growth.
Biswangan Shiksha Niketan was born from the need to address this gap and provide children with the opportunity to dream, learn and achieve.
Our aim is not merely to establish schools, but to create institutions that can progressively strengthen the educational and social fabric of the most marginalized communities they serve.
Biswangan Shiksha Niketan, Kumirmari
Our first school was established on 7 April 2025 at Kumirmari Island in the Sundarbans, a geographically remote and underserved region of West Bengal by making over a dilapidated abandoned building provided to us by local administration.
The school serves children from local tribal and marginalized communities who have historically had limited access to quality education and other opportunities. We began with a modest infrastructure, but with an ambition to build a sustainable institution that can grow with its students.
Our focus is on building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, while developing creative and critical thinking, environmental awareness, human values and an appreciation of the children’s cultural heritage.
Biswangan Shiksha Niketan, Tanasi, Purulia
Our second school, Biswangan Shiksha Niketan, Tanasi, was established on 19 January 2026 in a Saontal village near the Ayodhya Hills of Purulia, West Bengal.
The school began in a modest one room community hall, initially serving young children around four to five years of age, many of whom had little or no previous exposure to formal schooling.
Our approach at Tanasi is rooted in the same commitment to quality education and holistic development, while being especially attentive to the children’s language, culture and local context.
The children are predominantly from the Saontal community. Their mother tongue is Santali, and we introduce them to Ol Chiki, the script of the Santali language. We use this familiar linguistic and cultural foundation as a bridge towards learning English, enabling children to acquire a wider language capability without losing their connection with their own identity.
We plan to add one higher class every year, allowing the children to continue their education within the school as they grow.

A Safe and Inclusive Environment
Our schools seek to provide a safe space where every child is valued and respected. We promote gender equality, inclusivity and a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination.
Culture at the Centre of Education
Although Kumirmari and Tanasi face different geographical and social circumstances, local culture remains central to the way we impart education at both locations.
We believe that education becomes more meaningful when children see their own language, traditions, heritage and community reflected in their learning environment.
At the same time, we want children to understand the larger society of which they are a part. Through this balance, we seek to nurture children who are proud of their cultural identity while developing a broader sense of belonging, responsibility and participation in nation building.

Our early childhood education programmes focus on playful learning, social skills and foundational knowledge to prepare children for formal schooling.
Primary Education
We provide a comprehensive primary education programme combining academics with extracurricular activities to support the child's overall development.
Special Initiatives
Our work around the schools also includes:
- Health and Nutrition: Health initiatives and nutritious meals for students
- Scholarships: Support for deserving students to continue their education
- Community Outreach: Workshops and awareness programmes for parents and community members
Both schools are at the beginning of their journey. Our aspiration is to develop them gradually into strong, sustainable and community-rooted educational institutions.
We believe meaningful change does not happen overnight. It comes from investing consistently in teachers, children, learning resources, health, values and the communities around them.
